How this is calculated, and why the numbers are a floor
Each pipeline's length — GEM's reported figure, or the length measured from the mapped route where none is reported — is apportioned across its recorded owners by their reported percentage share, then summed by company.
A stake where GEM records an owner but no percentage contributes nothing to the sum here, rather than being guessed at. Companies with at least one such unweighted stake are marked † below: their true attributable length is higher than the figure shown, by an amount this ranking cannot quantify.

- The same way as the length ranking: GEM's reported figure where given, and the length measured from the mapped route where none is reported. A pipeline with neither is excluded from this ranking rather than counted as zero.
- Does a length-based ranking mean anything different from a capacity-based one?
- Yes. A long, low-capacity gathering line and a short, high-capacity trunk line can hold the same rank here for very different reasons. This ranking is about the extent of network a company has an ownership interest in, not the volume it can move.
